50 Free Winter Activity Ideas

Winter. It’s cold. The kids are home for the holidays or for snow days. You might be at a loss to figure out what to do with them that is affordable and fun. Here we have a list of 50 ideas of free or cheap activities for kids. Some of these activities are outdoors, so please keep our tips for keeping safe outside in mind.

  1. Snowball fight
  2. Make snow angels
  3. Make a snowman
  4. Go sledding
  5. Make snow paintings with bottles filled with colored water.
  6. Take a walk outside
  7. Have a scavenger hunt (indoors or outdoors)
  8. Read a story
  9. Perform a play
  10. Write a story
  11. Make a pillow fort
  12. Do a jigsaw puzzle
  13. Play board games
  14. Learn a new craft (like knitting, crocheting, or sewing)
  15. Bake and decorate cookies
  16. Write letters to friends and family
  17. Take pictures and videos to share online or make an album
  18. Have a dance party
  19. Pick out toys to donate
  20. Do extra chores for some extra allowance
  21. Do simple home science experiments
  22. Make a pet rock
  23. Tell each other jokes
  24. Have a talent show
  25. Make homemade gifts
  26. Learn a new dance
  27. Learn a new cooking skill
  28. Make paper snowflakes
  29. Sing karaoke
  30. Visit the library
  31. Check out local free events at museums
  32. Make and play homemade musical instruments
  33. Give each other manicures and pedicures

These are just a few of the free or cheap activities you can do with your family in the cold winter months. With some creativity, you can keep your kids entertained even when it’s snowing and cold.
