Dear Senator ____,

I encourage you to support the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Pregnant and Parenting Student Services Act of 2007 (S.915). This bill would provide incentives to colleges and universities to establish offices on campus that serve the needs of pregnant and parenting students.

College-aged women face the highest risk of abortion. Women with some college have a pregnancy rate that is lower than average, but still have the highest abortion rate of any educational group. Forty-five percent of women who have abortions are college-aged, 18-24 years old. Among women who had abortions, 71% of 18-19 year olds and 58% of 20-24 year olds said pregnancy would interfere with their education or career.

As a member of Feminists for Life, I believe no woman should be forced to choose between her education and her children. We are working to change this scenario, because women deserve better. FFL's College Outreach Program works to eliminate the root causes of abortion—primarily lack of practical resources and support—through holistic, women-centered solutions.

Since 1994, Feminists for Life's College Outreach Program has been a catalyst for change on campuses across the country. FFL breaks through the rhetoric that pits women against their children and works—with people on both sides of the abortion issue—to foster creative solutions for pregnant and parenting students. Non-confrontational Pregnancy Resource Forums bring students, university administrators, campus heath clinic staff, residential life advisors, counselors, financial aid directors, and other members of the campus community together to identify and evaluate resources for pregnant and parenting students and create a blueprint for progress. The Forums redirect energy from polarized debate to creative solutions like telecommuting and child care services.

Since FFL began the program, Planned Parenthood reports that there has been a 30% drop in abortions among college graduates.

Americans have different views on abortion, but we can all agree that abortions should be reduced and that pregnant and parenting students deserve resources and support. The Elizabeth Cady Stanton Pregnant and Parenting Student Services Act of 2007 will extend vital resources to pregnant and parenting students across the United States. Please support S.915.

Sincerely,
Jane A. Citizen
